Calculations: How The Black Princesses Can Qualify From The Group Stage

The U20 Women’s team of Ghana, the Black Princesses lost their second game in the ongoing U20 women’s world cup tournament in Costa Rica.

The gallant team lost their first game to the United states of America by 3 goals to nil and also lost their second game against Japan by 2 goals to nil.

Losing their skipper and key player, Evelyn Badu as well as the red card to Jacqueline Owusu could be one of the several excuses for the team’s performance. Although there is a slim chance of qualifying now, all hope is not lost.

For the Black Princesses to qualify they must first record a victory against their last group opponents, Netherlands. The European based team lost their first game to Japan by recording a 3-0 win against the USA. This means that both USA and Netherlands are on 3 points while Ghana is last with zero points. A huge victory with a high goal margin will be key for the Black Princesses to qualify.

Another factor that must come into play to ensure the Black Princesses qualify from the group is Japan beating the USA. Japan have automatically secured a spot in the knockout stages having won 2 of their games. Should they beat the USA, this will open the possibility of another country qualifying ahead of the USA. Ghana will secure this spot if they are able to beat Netherlands, but it requires that the team wins with not less than 6 goals having conceded the most goals in the group.

The Black Princesses will face the Netherlands on Wednesday.
