There are countless number of Ghanaian football players in Europe; however, only a handful of these footballers are goalies. This is because our goalkeepers rarely get contracts in Europe, and the few privileged ones are also not able to play in the top leagues as compared to the outfield players.
Thus, the goalies do not receive much attention as given to their outfield colleagues. This piece is therefore throwing light on three young Ghanaian goalkeepers plying their trade in Europe, and performing creditably well for their respective clubs.
1. Lawrence Ati-Zigi - St. Gallen
Ati-Zigi is the first choice goalie for St. Gallen in the Swiss Super League. The 23-year-old footballer has been consistent for the Swiss club since joining them last season. He has kept four clean sheets in seven appearances for the club in the ongoing season.
Also, at the international level, he has played for the U20 side, and he is currently the second choice goalie for the senior national team, Black Stars.
2. Abdul Manaf Nurudeen - K.A.S Eupen
The 21-year-old goalie plays in the Belgian top-flight league for Eupen. The player made his first senior appearance for the club over the weekend. The former Aspire Senegal player has been capped thrice by the Ghana U20 team at the international level.
3. Joseph Anang - West Ham United
Anang is the first choice goalkeeper for the U23 team of English Premier League side, West Ham United. He has kept one clean sheet in seven appearances in premier league 2. The 20-year-old holds both English and Ghanaian citizenships, and has been capped once by the English U20 team.
The trio have a huge potential and could be valuable assets for the senior national team; thus, the technical directorate of the Ghana Football Association should monitor their progress especially for Nurudeen and Anang who are yet to make an appearance at the senior level.
