Summary Of Accra Hearts Of Oak Triumph In 2020/21 Season

It was a stuttering start to life in the Ghana Premier League for Accra Hearts of Oak, but on Sunday 11th July, 2021, the Phobians emerged 2020/21 Ghana Premier League Champions following a split of honors with Liberty Professionals, that came about as second-placed Asante Kotoko failed to keep the chase for the title through a defeat to Bechem United.

How did the season go for Accra Hearts of Oak?

Coach Edward Nii Odoom was backed by top officials of the club to lead them to the promised land. His tenure was short lived due to unimpressive performances and result on the pitch. After losing to Aduana Stars, sharing points with AshantiGold at home and losing to Inter Allies in Accra, the innumerable fans registered their displeasure over results churned out by the team. Top officials tried to shield Nii Odoom but never yielded the intended outcome.

A meticulous search was done and Serbian trainer Kosta Papic was hired to alter the direction of the ship. His early part of his short spell was marked with hope and confidence, as some traced him as the ideal employee to supervise a successful season for the club. He strategized the 6 - 1 mauling of Bechem United at the Accra Sports Stadium. Mixed results amidst a purported dressing room wrangling culminated in a shocking resignation from the former Chippa United coach. The defeat to Medeama in Tarkwa surged emotions enraged supporters, and the the relationship between Papic and his employers came to an end.

Another hunting was carried out and the cast fell on Samuel Boadu, then coaching Medeama. After weeks of speculation, the official announcement went viral. Accra Hearts of Oak seized the opportunity in the transfer window to bring on board Salifu Ibrahim from Eleven Wonders, who will later emerge a demigod. Hopes were garnered following a change in style of play and consistent outcomes.

Such happenings led the entire Accra Hearts of Oak fraternity to come into terms with the fact that, they could win the Ghana Premier League. Wins over King Faisal, Eleven Wonders and Bechem United deepened the title ambitions.

Meanwhile, they were given a hot chase by sworn rivals Asante Kotoko. They kept sharing the table’s summit for weeks until the time arrived for the champion to be decided in the super clash. Daniel Afriyie Barnieh sealed the moment with a lone goal over Mariano Barreto and his lads. A three point lead was opened after week 31, between Ghana’s most glamorous clubs.

Accra Hearts of Oak had to wait till week 33 to be crowned 2020/21 Ghana Premier League champions following a 1 - 1 draw with city rivals Liberty Professionals, after Bechem United had humbled Asante Kotoko 2 - 1.
