Isaac Mensah’s Goal Helps Hearts of Oak Sink Wydad Athletic Club

A spirited first half performance by Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium against Wydad Athletic Club gave them a step towards a good second leg in Morocco. 

The Morocco club started their attack early in the game giving them two corner kicks in succession under two minutes. The Phobians managed to clear their lines in both. The Phobians came into the game briefly with Mohammed Alhassan sending a long ball to Kofi Kodzi but WAC defenders dealt with it. The Moroccans has the chance to score but Richard Attah made a fine save on the 5th minute. On the 10th minutes Hearts of Oak had a free kick floated into WAC goal area but it was cleared by the defenders.

Emmanuel Nettey struck a long shot after a beautiful passing game by the Phobians in the 14th minute but the shot went wide. Unfortunately for Hearts of Oak, left back, Raddy Ovouka got injured and was replaced by William Denkyi on the 20th minutes. It was a big blow for the Phobians. Both sides could not create any clear cut chances but managed to size themselves. The Phobians could not test the goalkeeper of Wydad Athletic Club neither WAC create any goal scoring chances until they went for water break. Hearts of Oak had a fine chance to score on the 36th minute but a goal mouth melee ensured the Phobians wasted it with WAC goalkeeper parrying the ball away.

A beautiful play by the Phobians on the 39th minute but striker Kofi Kodzi fired wide with his left foot. Hearts of Oak found the net on the 41st minute when Ibrahim Salifu’s beautiful long range cross from the left hand side of attack which Isaac Mensah tapped in for the first goal moving into the break.

The second half saw Fatawu Mohammed send in a cross but it was dealt with by WAC for a corner for the Phobians. The corner kick was wasted. WAC made an incursion into Hearts of Oak’s goal area but it was cleared by the Phobians 51st minute. The Phobians nearly doubled the lead but Kofi Kodzi was beaten in the air by the WAC defenders on the 56th minutes. Kofi Kodzi struck a shot which nearly doubled the Phobians lead again on the 58th minute but the WAC goalkeeper saved the situation for WAC.

Hearts of Oak should have doubled the lead when Kofi Kodzi set up Salifu Ibrahim but he blew wide on the 65th minute of the second half. On the 68th minute Salim Adams came on for Frederick Ansah Botchway with Enock Esubonteng coming on for first goal scorer, Isaac Mensah. Isaac Agyenim came on for Salifu Ibrahim and Victor Aidoo came on for Kofi Kodzi on the 86th minute. WAC scored in added time but it was adjudged offside. The referee ended the game with Hearts of Oak winning by 1-0 moving into the second leg at the Mohammed V Stadium on October 24.
