The humiliation on the hands of Bayern Munich on 14th August 2020 in Lisbon was one of the reasons why Josep Maria Bartomeu was asked to resign in which he eventually did. Barcelona then went to the polls to elect a new President in which Joan Laporta came out successful as the new President. Joan Laporta has been tasked to improve the team to challenge other teams in Europe with the likes Erling Halaand, David Alaba, Eric Garcia and Wijnaldum all on the radar of the President.

Joan Laporta seems to be lucky as he draws closer to landing his first player for Barcelona. Netherlands international and Liverpool star, Gini Wijnaldum looks set to join the Blaugranes this summer after agreeing a pre-contract deal with the Catalan giants per reports. The Dutchman has become the Blaugrana’s first signing under Joan Laporta.

The Merseyside outfit have tried everything they could to renew the Dutchman's contract but he prefers to play under his former manager Ronald Koeman. The 30-year-old joined Liverpool in 2016 from Newcastle United has since then played 228 games with 22 goals and 16 assists in all competitions. The Dutchman contract with Liverpool will expire in June which will render him a free agent.

Gini Wijnaldum has made 40 appearances for the Merseyside Red in all competitions this season and he is valued around £31.5 million. The transfer of Wijnaldum is clear that Ronald Koeman has the full support of the Barcelona board and therefore his job is secured for now.

Dear cherished reader, do you think Barcelona will be able to compete in Europe with the addition of Georginio Wijnaldum?
