Popular German Trainer Shows Interest in Black Stars Job

The Black Stars of Ghana are currently without a coach following the exit Milovan Rajevac.

The Serbian trainer steered the four time African champions to their worse ever AFCON campaign since 2006. The Black Stars exited the 2021 tournament in Cameroon with just a point from three Group C games. The West African nation opened their campaign with a 1-0 defeat to North African giants, Morocco at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium. The followed it up with a 1–1 draw against Gabon where they relinquished a lead to be held which eventually became their only point of the tournament. The result of the final group game sent shockwaves across the spines of the almost 30 million population.

Ghana, despite coming from two goals down to cancel out Comoros’ double, failed to hold on to the result and fell off at 3-2 after the entire game. The result left Ghana bottom of the table behind Comoros in third position, Gabon in second with Morocco topping the table. There was groundswell of call for the head of coach Milovan Rajevac and the Ghana Football Association has parted ways ways him following a meeting with the Sports Ministry. Several coaches have had their names crop up as potential candidates for the Black Stars job.

Deputy coach, Maxwell Konadu has much experience and is being considered for the job. Other coaches whose name have come up include, former Kotoko coach, Mas-Ud Didi Dramani and Borussia Dortmund assistant coach, Otto Addo. Former assistant Cameroon coach, Ibrahim Tanko is also in the picture. The latest to appear interested in the Ghana job is 2002 AFCON winning coach, Winfred Schafer. He German coach led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to the 2002 AFCON trophy after beating Senegal 3-2 on penalty shootouts after the game had ended goalless in regulation time.
