Hearts of Oak to make light work of AshantiGold in MTN FA Cup finals?

Accra Hearts of Oak will want to confirm their status as the millennium champions of Ghana when they go at the MTN FA Cup finals. The Phobians were crowned champions of Ghana in the 2020/21 Premier League after beating some top clubs to annex the trophy. The Phobians were not given a dog’s chance to claim the league title due to problems related to their technical issues. The likes of Medeama Sporting Club, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Aduana Stars, Karela United and Accra Great Olympics were the clubs tipped to easily come closer to the league and probably win it.

However the Phobians got off their blocks and shocked the entire nation with their sumptuous performances. The club, led by coach Samuel Boadu surprised many football fans by record ya lengthy winning streak in the league. Samuel Boadu who joined Hearts of Oak in a 3-year deal from Medeama, led the Phobians to a 13-game unbeaten run. They were looking for their 14-game winning streak before West Africa Football Academy halted their progress at the Sogakope Park in the final day of the fixture. Hearts of Oak recorded an impressive 61 points as against Kotoko’s 57 to claim their first league title and 21st for the first time in 11 years.

Hearts of Oak will return to the CAF Champions League following their league triumph. Hearts of Oak won the CAF Champions League in the year 2000 with a crack squad. The team went unbeaten in the entire campaign. The now 21 time Ghana Premier League defeated top Tunisia club, Esperance Sportif de Tunis 5-2 after a two legged clash on a home and away basis. The following year, the Phobians stunned the entire continent again by beating another Africa and Egypt giants, Zamalek 2-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium Stadium in Kumasi to be crowned the CAF Super Cup champions.

Hearts of Oak went on to make history where four years after claiming the CAF Champions League, they went on to win the maiden edition of the CAF Confederation introduced by the Confederation of African Football. The Phobians defeated rivals, Asante Kotoko 8-7 on penalty shootouts after the two games have ended 2-2 on home and away basis. The Phobians shocked the fans at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi to add the second tier CAF tournament to their wardrobe.

Hearts of Oak probably have the easy route to win the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup and make it a double this season. The 2001 CAF Super Cup winners are in the finals of the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup finals as the prepare to play fellow premier league side, AshantiGold at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, August 8. Hearts of Oak beat off competition from Medeama Sporting club in the semi finals at the Cape Coast Stadium to book a final slot. The Phobians tamed the Mauve and Yellow by 3-0 when many did not expect them to achieve that feat.

The result sent shock waves down the spine of many football fans but many were equally not suro rii judging from the kind of form Hearts of Oak exhibited in the lead up to winning the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League. The Phobians are the record holders of the FA Cup as they have won the title for 10 record time. They have just title better than rivals, Asante Kotoko who have nine titles to their credit. The last time Hearts of Oak came closer to the title in 2017 but unfortunately for them, the fell heavily to rivals, Asante Kotoko by 3-1 at the Tamale Sports Stadium. Coming up against AshantiGold is certainly a big game and the Phobians will not find things easy but they are bent on claiming a double this season.
