Is Football Getting Soft? Micheal Essien Amazed At Red Cards At Afcon.

Former Black Star midfielder general, Micheal Essien has commented on the ongoing debate about the numerous send-offs of players through red cards by referees.

With as much as six red cards in the round of sixteen alone at the ongoing Afcon tournament, many have asked questions about the kind of football the new generation of players are playing, thanks to the introduction of the Video Assistance Referee (VAR).

According to the former Chelsea Star, these series of red cards in the tournament is making the sport soft.

"Is Football getting soft?" He queried on his Instagram page.

With an attached video footage of himself, where he was being roughly tackled by an opponent in the CAN 2008 edition of the tournament, Micheal Essien sort to blame the introduction of the VAR for these red cards that have been flashed severally at the Afcon.

The VAR offers many opportunities to the referees to watch an incident over and over again before taking a decision or changing a previously taken one. By this, a caution to a player could be change to a red card after careful examination of a slow motioned video. An otherwise mild tackle then appears more career threatening at a VAR review, thereby, warranting a send-off.

One remember how robust Micheal Essien was in his playing days. The hard nut to crack midfielder takes no prisoners. He was nicknamed as the Bison for how physical he goes on the field.

For this, he wondered whether players like him would have survived the current VAR reviews.

"Imagine if there was VAR at that time, none of us will survive" He said.
