It has been 12 years since The Flames qualified for their last Africa Cup of Nations. Their two previous appearances all ended in the group stage exit. Malawi heads into the tournament in a form. They lost 5 of their 6 World Cup qualifiers and won only 1. How are they going to be mentally prepared for the AFCON? Ranked 129 by FIFA, 35 by CAF, the minnows will need a special performance to progress to the knockout stage for the first time in their history. Head coach Meck Mwase's 23-man squad is dominated by locally-based players. 5 out of his 23 man squad plies their trade in South Africa, 1 each in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Georgia and Moldova. 13 are Malawi-based footballers.

In group B, on 10th January, Malawi will begin their campaign against Guinea at Kouekong Stadium in Baffousam. Zimbabwe and Senegal are their next opponents respectively. Can the flames qualify from the group stage for the first time?

The core of the team

Big Bullets goalkeeper Ernest Kankhobwe will man the post since Brighton Munthali is not part of the selected 23 players. Amazulu defender Limbikani Mzava is lacking game time but still, he alongside Charles Petro of Sherif Tiraspol are the men to organise The Flames defence. UD Songo midfielder John Banda and Chikoti Chirwa of Red Lions will serve as the main link between the defence and the attack for The Flames. Simba winger Peter Banda, Polokwane City forward Peter Khuda and Francisco Madinga of Dila Gori will be responsible for goals for Malawi.
