The 2020/21 Ghana Premier League brought a lot of excitement, a lot of goals, a lot of assists and skills. We cannot do without talking about the several revelations of the league seasons. Some players that became a toast of the fans and football pundits at large include Hearts of Oak’s Salifu Ibrahim and Accra Great Olympics Gladson Awako. One crack goal that capped the season was that of James Bissue. In the end, it was a fine ending to the season.
However, prior to the season, several judgements about which clubs stand the chance of winning the league title. Some football pundits stated their top four standings with the pictures looking different from each pundits. Clubs that had much entry into the top six are Great Olympics, Asante Kotoko, Medeama, Aduana Stars, AshantiGold, Karela United with Accra Hearts of Oak not having much representation in the lineup. The pundits looked right from with their judgement from the onset because if you looked at the depth of the squads of these clubs, indeed they looked solid more than Hearts of Oak especially Great Olympics, Medeama and Asante Kotoko.
The fact of the matter is, Hearts of Oak were also struggling to find a new coach to steer the affairs of the club’s technical affairs. It was Edward Nii Odoom who was in interim charge before the club brought in Serbian trainer, Costa Papic. Unfortunately for the Phobians, he left halfway through the season with Nii Noi taking charge and interestingly winning a number of games in the process.
There was soon going to be good news for the Phobians and the good news the arrival of former Medeama FC coach, Samuel Boadu. The young tactician almost immediately changed the fortunes of the playing body. Hearts of Oak became so transformed under Samuel Boadu that some players who were deemed surplus to requirement now began showing signs of sharpness. Samuel Boadu’s transformation of the club led to the club going the whole season without a defeat in 13 games. The only club that halted their search for their 14th league victory was West Africa Football Academy.
The Academy Boys stopped the Phobians by 1-0 on the last day of the 2020/21 league games at the Sogakope Park. The Phobians claimed 61 points with Kotoko on 57 in second. Hearts of Oak are now preparing to play Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco in the second preliminary stage of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.
