FLASHBACK: Tell them you are from Ghana, not Jamaica – Mother of Wrestling Superstar, Kofi Kingston

Kofi Kingston contends under the flag of Jamaica. To most wrestling fans, Sarkodie-Mensah is the first Jamaican wrestler in World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). But his factual individuality is very dissimilar because to his household and networks, he is Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah from Ghana.

Most wrestling fans have undoubtedly never heard of Ghana, so the wrestling body decided that fans would be more likely to embrace a wrestler from Jamaica. In his desperation to become wrestling's superstar, he denied who he was and said I was actually born in Jamaica. To be honest with a name like Kofi a lot of people assume I was born in Ghana.

But nonetheless he denies it, his mother being the head of a Ghanaian-American organization in the US has confirmed that he was definitely born in Ghana, and not in Jamaica. The family only moved to the US in 1982. His mom revealed the real reason why her son came up with the Jamaica idea. She said I told him: 'Kofi, your cousins watch you on TV in Ghana and want to know why you don't say you're from Ghana. Kofi responded Tell them it is business.

But after he discovered that his mother had exposed his secret uniqueness to the press, Sarkodie-Mensah barred her and the rest of his family from speaking to the media, for fear of compromising his career. She's very happy I am doing what I want to do," he says of his mother. "But I don't think she knows how big wrestling really is.

A family member of his in the Ashanti region of Ghana thought of his becoming a well-regarded teacher like his grandfather. When he entered the corporate world, Kofi said My first day at work I sat in my cubicle and looked at the empty walls and it was very depressing. He then swapped his professional suit for bright yellow wrestler's trunks. He continued the first day I walked into the wrestling school, I knew I was in the right place.

Why did he prefer Jamaica to the land of Peace and gold? Irrespective of the fame and successes he has chalked in the wrestling industry, was it right for him to have denied Ghana where he was truly born?
