It is very painful to come this close to winning a league title and your opponent shutters your dreams. This is exactly what happened to Galatasaray. Before the last game of the season (Gameweek 40), both teams were favourites to clinch the 2020/2021 season trophy.
Besiktas had a total of 81 points from 39 games and a goal difference of 44 putting them in first place on the league table. Galatasaray also had 81 points from 39 games and a goal difference of 42 putting them in second place. Hence Galatasaray needed to win their last game by a greater goal margin than Besiktas's.
Besiktas won it's last game against against Goztepe by 2-1 and had 84 points with a total goal difference of 45. Galatasaray won it's last game against by 3-1 against Yeni Malatysapor and also had 84 points at the end of the season but with a total goal difference of 44.
This moved Besiktas to first place and caused Galatasaray to remain at the second position.
Galatasaray lost the season's title to rival, Besiktas just by a marginal total goal difference of 1. This is very heartbreaking to both the players and the fans of Galatasaray.
Both teams have qualified to play in the UCL qualification stages next season (2021/2022).
Congratulations to Besiktas on winning the 2020/2021 Turkish Super Lig title.
