It is disheartening to be relegated to second tier football after a long while in the top flight or the premier league for a football club. Playing in the top flight is a bigger opportunity compared to the second tier as the top flight gets a massive media coverage so players get the opportunity to sell themselves very quickly to the world. However for the second tier or Division One, especially in Ghana, television coverage is very difficult to come by if not rare. It therefore makes it extremely difficult for pure talent to be displayed to the world easily.
It is for these reasons that lot of players will not want to play in the second tier when their club gets relegated from the top flight. Most players feel playing in the second tier is demeaning to their level and quality. Other players feel it is a backward step and a dent to their standard. However, Liberty Professionals Paul Kwame says he will not leave the club simply because they have been demoted to the second tier of Ghana football. Paul Kwame says he will play in the Division One League next season but he might leave if a chance or a mouthwatering deal comes up.
The central defender is targeting a move outside Ghana but equally he will not rush to grab any deal at all that will not benefit his career. “I won’t say I’m ready to leave Liberty because of we being in Division One, you know as football anything can happen and if there is an offer that is around obviously it’s a football business and also a career you’ve chosen so in life when there is a chance and opportunity for you, you have to take it so if it’s a good offer why not. I will just take that chance and go and play but I will not base solely like Liberty is in Division One so I’m leaving just like that. I will just continue and also if a chance comes why not.” He told Adamu Muftawu.
Liberty Professionals have been served as the production line for the various Ghana national teams right from the U-17, U-20, U-23 and the senior national team, the Black Stars. Liberty Professionals have produced big name players for the senior national team, the Black Stars of Ghana. Africa’s all time top scorer at the FIFA World Cup and former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan is a product of Liberty Professionals. Former Black Stars midfielders, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Derick Boateng, and Kwadwo Asamoah are all products of Liberty Professionals. Goalkeeper Daniel Agyei came from the stable of Liberty Professionals as well.
It is sad to note that, a football club that produced UEFA Champions League winners, Africa Cup of Nations participants, English FA Cup winner, Scudetto winners, Ghana Premier League winners, CAF Champions League participants and several other title will be playing in the Ghana Division One League next season.
