Why in football some teams are referred to as underdogs
An underdog is a person or group in a competition, usually in sports and creative works, who is largely expected to lose. The party, team, or individual expected to win is called the favorite or top dog. In the case where an underdog wins, the outcome is an upset.
When dog fighting was prevalent in the 18th century, the term "underdog" was established. The names of the dogs and their odds would be written on a whiteboard during these events so that the audience could put their bets.
The underdog is venerated in most communities. The story of David and Goliath serves as a wonderful example. In that tale, David was a typical underdog who eventually triumphed.
In a story, the Fool is often an underdog if they are the main character. Their apparent ineptitude leads to people underestimating their true abilities, and they are able to win either through luck or hidden wisdom against a more powerful, "establishment" villain
Ghana was an underdog at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but they managed to reach the quarterfinals.
Italy went into penalties with England in this Euro 2020 when all statistical data indicated that they would lose, therefore they went into the penalty kick out as underdogs, but they eventually came out triumphant, winning the Euro 2020.
