The Minister went to the States on medical grounds as it was told that he required a special treatment which was not offered here in Ghana. After some weeks of his stay in the US, in which some Ghanaians propagated his death, the minister finally arrived in Ghana some few days back.
Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta was amongst the President's nominees but failed to meet with the Appointment Committee on the schedule day due to his traveling to the US.
During his vetting today before the Appointment Committee, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta said something that got a lot of Ghanaians talking.
“I suspect you know that the issue of public service is one that really has been with the family [Ofori-Atta family] for a long time and I came into it with that aspect. I do not take a salary, I do not take a per diem, so those are not the objectives that I come with,” he said.
After making this confession about not taking salary or per diem, the Minister went on to explain that some people thinks he is doing all that he does to enrich himself but there are no truth in such idea.
Mr. Ofori-Atta also touched on the issue of Databank, and he believes that the longer stay of the bank have allow many customers to affiliate with it(Databank) and that is how it is currently influential.
“If you look outside the State, you will see that because of the 30 years in which the firm has run on values and skills, our alumni are everywhere in the banking and financial institutions of deep influence in what they do,” he said.
On issues with regards to the salary increment, the minister said that the government will negotiate a fair salary for it workers amid the COVID-19 pandemic impact.
“We have had a relatively peaceful environment during this time because the [Finance and Labour Relations Ministries] have made a special effort to create a partnership with labour and employers, which enables information-sharing and an understanding of where we are going as a government. I think we have kept faith with that.”
“I can assure you that we are clearly aware of the level of salaries that we have for our people, and we also know the impact on our revenue. By all means, we’ll strike a balance that is sustainable. Let me assure you that, we’ll not compromise on fair negotiations.”
