For several weeks, rumors have linked coach Prosper Ogum to Asante Kotoko. The porcupine warriors - last night - confirmed the appointment of the former Elmina Sharks coach on a two-year deal. Reactions, following the official announcement, came in a mixed form.
Asante Kotoko went trophyless last campaign. They commenced the season with coach Maxwell Konadu, who was ousted after few matches in charge, Johnson Smith and Gazali assumed the vacant coaching role and drove the team until the completion of the first part of the season.
Former Black Stars head coach Mariano Barreto later came on board with his countrymen. They fought as hard as they could for the ultimate, only to be defeated in Accra in a penultimate game, which scuttled their title aspirations. This means, league glory was over for them. Mariano Barreto-led Asante Kotoko tilted attention to FA Cup, hoping to win and make amends. Berekum Chelsea eliminated them in Obuasi via penalties and that will later crumble the empire.
The Portuguese tactician had his future associated with an early departure. His public pronouncements on the club’s internal matters further fueled his exit ahead of next campaign.
The Kumasi-based, after putting their fans and football enthusiasts on suspense, finally announced coach Prosper Ogum as successor to Mariano Barreto. Prosper Ogum - last season - guarded West African Football Academy, WAFA to a top four finish.
Prosper Ogum, a Sports Psychologist and Educationist is tipped to whisk the fortunes of the club around next season. He takes over a club that is results-oriented and pressure could mount on him from the loyalist. He succeeds a coach who finished second, hence there will be no room for similar outcomes. The expectations and ambitions of WAFA are in sharp contrast to that of Asante Kotoko.
While some supporters of Asante Kotoko have welcomed his arrival, others reminded him of what is ahead as the club’s new head coach.
“Woooow! Congratulations to him and us. Very much welcome sir. Working with us can be hard bcos Kotoko is dear to our hearts. But they we trust u to do great. More goals, more wins.”
“Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum is he ready for Asante Kotoko job”?
“Hope he can do a bette job and improve the team. Management should also up their duties.”
Next season, which kicks off late October, will vindicate this appointment. Time will determine if Prosper Narteh Ogum will thrive as head coach of the porcupine warriors.
