I have searched hard for the right word to describe journalists who rubbish clubs’ efforts to secure sponsorships. Petty! Yes, that is the word. The Ghana Premier League is about to commence its third season under this current G.F.A administration without a headline sponsor.
Mr. Kurt Okraku was elected as President of the Ghana Football Association in 2019. Since that time, two football calendar years have been exhausted. The 2019/2020 season was short-lived as the global pandemic halted all football activities in the world. This is important to note the GPL was played without major sponsors. Most of the funds came from FIFA relieves and grants. We all witnessed the burden our clubs carried until the season got truncated. Brands were hit by the COVID, so fans understood why the administration couldn’t secure deals.
In the 2020/2021 season, the GFA made progress by announcing sponsorship deals with companies like Melcom. Despite the effort, Kurt and his team had no headline sponsor for the GPL. People still understood because corporate bodies were now recovering from the pandemic. The league was exciting, especially when the two giants in the league Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak went toe-to-toe for the league title.
The 2021/2022 season is set to begin on the 29th of this month. Yet, the GFA has not announced a headline sponsor. After last season’s ecstasy, I believe the GPL’s brand has risen enough to secure a bumper deal from the corporate world. We cannot go another round without the motivation, cushion and support from the bigger brands.
This subject should be the collective campaign of the media instead of discussing individual club’s finances. How the teams have been able to survive playing a non-profitable and debt-assured league for two consecutive seasons is really underappreciated.
