It is just a day to go for Accra Hearts of Oak to make Ghana and its fans proud in the 2021/22 CAF Champions League.

Hearts of Oak will welcome Morocco giants, Wydad Athletic Club at the Accra Sports Stadium for the second preliminary CAF Champions League clash. Hearts of Oak qualified for the 2021/22 CAF Champions after being crowned champions of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League. The Phobians had struggled during the league season having had issues with coaching. It was Youth team coach, Edward Odoom who started the pre-season and some games in the league with the team before the Phobians went for a new coach in the person of Serbian trainer, Costa Papic. Unfortunately Papic left mid-way through the season with coach Nii Noi taking charge.

Hearts of Oak were still in search of a new coach despite Nii Noi winning some important games. Hearts of Oak later snapped up former Medeama head coach, Samuel Boadu who will go on to transform the side into a winning team. Under his tutelage, the Phobians record interesting score lines in the premier league which culminated in a long stretch winning streak. The Phobians will go on to win 13 matches without a defeat with only West Africa Football Academy halting their search for a 14th win on the last day of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League.

Hearts of Oak went ahead to win the 2020/21 league season regardless of that defeat to claim their 21st league title in 11 years. Hearts of Oak went on to win the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup to complete a domestic double in that same season. They defeated opponents like Elmina Sharks and Medeama to set up a grand finale against AshantiGold at the Accra Sports Sports Stadium. Hearts of Oak struggled to score after 90 minutes and the extra time as well. After a marathon penalty shootouts, Hearts of Oak won on 8-7 to claim a record 11th title as against Asante Kotoko’s nine titles.

The millennium champions will go on to represent Ghana at the 2021/22 CAF Champions League following the annexation of the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League. They were paired against Guinea side, Club Industriel de Kamsar which they eliminated in a one legged qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium due to the Coup D’Etat in Guinea. The score line ended 2-0 for Hearts of Oak with burly striker, Kofi Kodzi and Salim Adams scoring the two goals for the Phobians.

Hearts of Oak will now meet the Morocco giants, Wydad Athletic Club for the first leg on Sunday with the second leg coming in a week time at the Mohammed V Stadium in Rabat. The Phobians have stepped up their training ahead of the clash as a convincing win in the first leg will be a boost ahead of the second leg away.

The fans cannot be left out of the equation as they have started acquiring their tickets to go see the match on Sunday. With prices as much as GHc100 to GHc300, tickets have almost finished with the fans trooping to get their tickets for the game on Sunday.
