He might have left Accra Hearts of Oak but he has certainly not forgotten about the club that contributed to making him great and that is Benjamin Afutu Kotey.

The gritty midfielder was a key member of the history making Hearts of Oak side in the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League. He manned the midfield with great finesse that endeared him to the club’s teeming fans and football pundits in general. He is part of the team that won the 2020/21 Ghana Premier League and the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup, giving Hearts of Oak a domestic double for the first time over two decades and an automatic domestic treble.

Many thought Benjamin Afutu was going to be part of the squad that will play in the 2021/22 CAF Champions League but contractual issues did not make his stay at the 2000 CAF Champions League winners possible. He has since left the Phobians to sign for a club in Egypt but he has not forgotten about Hearts of Oak’s CAF Champions League campaign and took to Twitter to wish them good luck. Hearts of Oak will host the Morocco giants at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 17 for the second preliminary qualifier of the 2021/22 CAF Champions League first leg. The second leg will come up at the Mohammed V Stadium in Rabat on October 24. 

Hearts of Oak qualified for the 2021/22 CAF Champions League second stage after eliminating Guinea side, Club Industriel de Kamsar by 2-0 in a one legged qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium. The one leg came up due to the Coup D’Etat in Guinea. The Phobians will qualify for the group stage if they win the duel over two legs. Hearts of Oak collected 61 points from 34 matches in the 2022/21 Ghana Premier League season, beating arch rivals, Asante Kotoko to the league title. Asante Kotoko amassed 57 points to place second much to the chagrin of its vociferous fans.

Hearts of Oak also went ahead to win the 2020 MTN FA Cup after beating AshantiGold in the finals. The Phobians beat off competition from Elmina Sharks and Medeama to set up the finals against AshantiGold at the Accra Sports Stadium. The Phobians recorded a n 8-7 penalty win to be crowned FA Champions for a record 11th time as against Kotoko’s nine titles. The Phobians have won the CAF Champions League, Confederation Cup and the Super Cup as well.
