The calculations for Real Madrid's chances of winning the league before facing Atletico Madrid

Following their victory over Sevilla on Sunday night, Real Madrid now has just six games left in the LaLiga Santander season. Los Blancos presently lead Barcelona in second place by 15 points, despite having played two more matches than their opponents.

Many Real Madrid fans are looking at their calendars to see when they may claim the LaLiga Santander title after their victory over Sevilla. That day would be ideal for those fans to be in the Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid, which is scheduled for Matchday 35 on either May 7 or May 8.

The formula for clinching the LaLiga Santander derby

The deficit would be nine points if Real Madrid and Barcelona won all of their remaining matches before the derby weekend. With three matchdays remaining after the Atletico Madrid versus Real Madrid match and Barcelona holding the head-to-head tiebreaker, the title could only be won at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano if the Catalan side drops points either before or during their own match against Real Betis that weekend.

Alternatively, if Real Madrid leads Barcelona by 12 points at the end of Matchday 35, they can win the title with any set of outcomes other than a Real Madrid loss and a Barcelona win that weekend.

In fact, Real Madrid might win the title before the journey across the city on Matchday 35, as long as the deficit is greater than 12 points at that point. Atleti would form a guard of honour for their opponents at their own stadium.

Barcelona will be hoping that Real Madrid loses points in the next games, but Los Blancos have showed incredible resiliency since losing 4-0 in the El Clasico in March.

The next matches for Real Madrid

For Barcelona to win LaLiga Santander, Real Madrid would have to lose nine of their remaining 18 games, while the Blaugrana would have to win all of their remaining games.

The first match is against Osasuna on Wednesday. Then they proceed to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu to greet Espanyol before heading to the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano. Following the derby, they will travel to Cadiz before finishing the season at home against Real Betis.
