Messi will be absent from Argentina's World Cup qualifiers against Chile, Colombia.

(Xinhua) — BUENOS AIRES, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) — Lionel Messi will miss Argentina's 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia as he recovers from COVID-19, according to the Argentine Football Association (AFA).

The announcement came a day after Argentina captain Lionel Messi resumed training with his club, Paris Saint-Germain, after a four-week absence.

The AFA has released a 27-man list for the qualifications, which will be held in Calama, northern Chile, on January 27 and Cordoba, central Argentina, five days later. Messi was not mentioned in the brief statement that accompanied the ranking.

Messi, 34, has not played since PSG drew 1-1 against FC Lorient on December 22 in France's Ligue 1.

The forward revealed last week that he had taken longer than expected to recover from the infection.

Argentina finished second in the 10-team South American qualifying group and is already secured a spot in football's showcase tournament in Qatar, which will take place from November 21 to December 18.
