With the January transfer window now behind us, Barcelona are looking ahead to the summer and already planning their next moves. Of course, with their rather questionable financial situation, it’s difficult to expect a major squad overhaul.
But that also doesn’t mean the Catalans won’t invest into their team, especially with the new board being installed quite soon. Each of the three main candidates has his own vision and an idea of how to approach the market and now have gotten some insight into Victor Font’s plan.
According to a recent report from Marca, Font has a shortlist of eight players for the summer transfer window. Even though not all will be signed, these represent options that Barcelona can afford while still acquiring quality reinforcements at the same time.
The same outlet says the eight names go as follows: Eric García, Kun Agüero, David Alaba, Georginio Wijnaldum, Juan Bernat, Memphis Depay, Rui Silva and Hakan Çalhanoğlu.
What ties all of these players together is their low price. All of them have an expiring contract still running at their respective clubs and that means Barcelona could theoretically land real bargains in the summer.
Some of them are players we hear a lot about in the media, such as García or Wijnaldum for example, while others may be players flying under the radar. Or at least they were up until this point in time.
Font is adamant that the team needs to be strengthened but with minimal investments and no major financial stretches. But as long as the quality remains of a high level, that seems like a good plan. We should also not forget that there will likely be some departures from the current squad that could potentially give the club a monetary boost and free up the wage bill.
When everything is said and done, however, Barcelona will have to be extremely smart about their business this summer, which has been their bane in recent years.
If Font, or any of the candidates, can finally change that, it will be a major step towards bringing the Catalan giant back to its feet.
