Earlier yesterday, giants Asante Kotoko announced Portuguese manager Mariano Barreto as their new head coach for the next one and half year.
Becoming the fourth manager to manage the Porcupine Warriors this season after Maxwell Konadu, Johnson Smith and Abdul Gazele, but who is he?
Mariano Jerónimo Barreto is a 64 years old manager born in Goa, India and of Portuguese descendant with a UEFA Pro License.
He started his managerial career with his native club Sporting CP as youth coach. Barretto later on became assistant manager at the Portuguese side under English manager Sir Bobby Robson. He left Sporting in 1996 and went on to serve supporting roles at Borussia Dortmund, Leca, Alverca and Lokomotiv Moscow.
Mariano earned his full managerial job in 2003 with the Ghana Black Stars. But he announced his resignation in September 2004 after just nine months in charge, citing problems in communications with the country’s football association.
The 64-year-old led Ghana to the Olympic Games in 2004. His biggest highlight with the team came prior to the Olympic Games when he sacked Sulley Muntari from camp for inviting his girlfriend to the team’s base.
Barreto after leaving Ghana went on to coach Portuguese side Maritimo and several other clubs in Europe including Russian sides Dynamo Moscow and Kuban Krasnador.
The Portuguese manager also managed the Ethiopian national team and some few clubs in Asia. His last managerial job came in 2019 with Lithuanian fold FC Stumbras Kaunas.
Barreto has vast experience but he’s yet to win a major trophy with any of his teams. However, he’s expected to win the league with Asante Kotoko come the end of the season.
Mariano will begin his Asante Kotoko managerial career with an away game against Eleven Wonders at the Ohene Ameyaw Park on Sunday, April 4.
The Porcupine Warriors sit 4th on the league table with 27 points after 16 games, 4 points behind leaders Karela United and with a game in hand.
