Accra Hearts of Oak are looking to build a highly formidable squad for the future and are currently leaving no stone unturned in their quest to do that. The Phobians are doing shrewd business as far as the transfer market is concerned with signing of players. The transfer activity can described as strategic as they are acquiring younger players and giving them a long term contract which held a great deal. The Phobians won the Ghana Premier League last season after a blistering performance under coach Samuel Boadu.
Hearts of Oak brought in the former Medeama coach and he guided them to a domestic treble in the process. After winning their 21st league title for the first time in 11 years, the Phobians went on to claim the 2020/21 MTN FA Cup after beating AshantiGold 8-7 on penalty shootouts and automatically claim the domestic treble. Hearts of Oak who won the 2000 CAF Champions League won 13 straight games in the lead up to their the Premier League title triumph.
The 2001 CAF Super Cup winners will represent Ghana in the 2021/22 CAF Champions League as a result of winning the league. They were paired against Guinea side, Club Industriel de Kamsar for the first preliminary game a in a one leg qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium due to the Coup D’Etat in Guinea. Hearts of Oak won 2-0 with striker, Kofi Kodzi and young midfielder, Salim Adams scoring for the Phobians. Hearts of Oak will now set up a second preliminary clash against Morocco club, Wydad Athletic Club over two legs. The first leg will held at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 17 with the second leg in a week.
Prior to playing in the CAF Champions League, Hearts of Oak made some interesting signings to augment their squad. The likes of strikers Kofi Kodzi and Isaac Agyenim Boateng, midfielders, Salim Adams, Gladson Awako, Enock Esubonteng, Benjamin Yorke and Suraj Seidu were all signed to strengthen the squad for both Africa and for the 2020/21 domestic season. Just yesterday, the Phobians announced the capture of 19-year-old Baafi Amankwah and he will be the club’s eighth signing.
The Ghanaian champions have now completed the signing of Berekum Chelsea midfielder, Ushau Abu. The defensive midfielder has joined the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup winners on a three-year deal. The 22-year-old is likely to be a replacement for Benjamin Afutu who left the Phobians at the end of the season. Ushau Abu will have to battle it out with young Salim Adams for the holding midfield role with Adams having a great debut against CI Kamsar from Guinea.
