Real Madrid extended their unbeaten La Liga start to the season to 11 games when they comfortably beat Sevilla 3-1 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, leaving them six points clear of the pack.
Despite heavy rains in the Spanish capital, there was a feeling of well-being at the Bernabeu before kick-off, when Thibaut Courtois received his Yashin trophy from Iker Casillas and Karim Benzema raised his Ballon d'Or in front of the home crowd, with an emerging Zinedine Zidane.
Real Madrid channeled that energy to start very quickly as Sevilla were not up to the start. It took the Blancos only five minutes to score when Luca Modric took advantage of a Vinicius Junior rebound behind Yassine Bounou from the penalty area.
However, just nine minutes into the second half, Sevilla shocked the Bernabeu with a goal against the flow of play, and the atmosphere in the stands quickly changed. Erik Lamela was found by Gonzalo Montiel with a great through ball, and the Argentine toe-poked the ball past Courtois from a tight angle in the box to bring his team back even.
After that, Madrid regained the lead with just over ten minutes remaining thanks to a skillful counterattack goal. After Marco Asensio in midfield dispossessed Rafa Mir, he fed Vini Jr., who advanced all the way into the penalty area.
The Brazilian laid it off unselfishly to Lucas Vazquez beside him, who easily tapped in.
Two minutes later, Federico Valverde scored with a thunderous strike from 20 yards out into the top corner to give his team a significant victory in style.
