Premier League

A new door opens for former Hearts of Oak gritty midfielder

There is a saying that when one door closes another one opens and such is the ways of life most of the time. One could spend several years at football club and after his long service, his exit could bring about controversy and the player will painfully leave the club. When the player is lucky he gets signed on by a football club abroad, that is either across the continent, Europe or Asia. Sometimes the player gets signed on by a club just around or in the league where he exited.

Just recently Ghana’s two biggest clubs, Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko transferred listed some players and as well loaned out some players. Those who were put on transfer list were not too happy and painfully left the club especially that of Asante y. Two captains, Felix Annan and Emmanuel Gyamfi have all left Asante Kotoko in a bizarre manner. Reports indicate that Emmanuel Gyamfi is on the verge of joining fellow Ghana Premier League club, Aduana Stars. Goalkeeper Felix Annan is yet to secure a club with Ghana Premier League entrants, Real Tamale United chasing his signature in earnest.

Another player who has struggled for game time at Asante Kotoko and left is Kwame Adom Frimpong. He has since joined former Ghana Premier League champions, Aduana Stars on a permanent deal. When we go the camp of Medeama, they also parted ways with goalkeeper, Eric Ofori Antwi in a protracted manner. The former Amidaus and Asante Kotoko goalkeeper has since joined Legon Cities FC ahead of the 2021/22 Ghana Premier League season. We shall talk about one player whose exit from a football club disturbed the fans at large and that is Benjamin Afutu. The midfielder left Hearts of Oak after playing an instrumental role in Yeni domestic double glory, that is the 2020 Ghana Premier League and the MTN FA Cup. He however did not sign a contract extension with the Phobians and he finally left.

Benjamin Afutu has now opened a new chapter in his career after he signed a deal with Egyptian Premier League entrants, Eastern Company Sporting Club, commonly known as (El Sharkia Dokhan FC). The hard tackling midfielder has signed a mouthwatering three-year contract with the Egyptian side and the contract will keep him at the club until 2024. He started training with his teammates on Wednesday after passing his mandatory medical test which is required of every player who signs a new deal with a new football club.

Afutu left Hearts of Oak after helping a great deal in their treble domestic success in the Ghana Premier League last season. He became a free agent after the expiration of his contract with the Phobians. The 24-year-old was the eye of Hearts of Oak’s midfield in the club’s run up to winning the domestic treble last season under Samuel Boadu last season. Following his sterling performance last season, Afutu played in 29 games for the Phobians, scoring five goals in the process.
