Paul Pogba joins Juventus from Manchester United on free transfer

Following the expiration of his contract with Manchester United, Paul Pogba has returned to Juventus on a free transfer.

Before making a then-record £89 million deal to United in 2016, the 29-year-old France midfielder had twice won the Serie A championship with the Italian powerhouses.

Prior to the announcement on Monday, he flew into Turin for his checkup on Friday.

Pogba struggled with injuries and had inconsistent form, so he has not played for United since April.Juventus stated: "There is always a ray of optimism that we shall see each other again, sooner or later, when we say farewell after an intense adventure shared together.

"He left as a youngster and returns as a man and a champion, but one thing has not changed: the desire to once again contribute to the indelible pages of the club's history. Pogba is back, and we are overjoyed.

Since Pogba and United were unable to come to terms on a new deal, the team announced at the beginning of June that he would become a free agent this summer.

In his first season back at the club, Pogba, who transferred from Le Havre to join the United academy in 2009 at age 16, helped them win the EFL Cup and Europa League, but those would turn out to be the only trophies he would win during his second stint.

He was demoted from vice captain in 2018 after a dispute with Jose Mourinho, the then-manager of United, before his effect was diminished by injuries and inconsistent play.

Pogba, who has 91 international appearances, played a key role in France's victory over Croatia at the 2018 World Cup.In the following season, he went on to score 16 goals for United, but throughout the previous three seasons, he only managed to net eight goals from 91 appearances, including one from 27 in the most recent season.

Over the course of his two stints at the club, Pogba made 233 appearances and scored 39 goals, but during his final home game against Norwich City in April, United fans booed him when he was replaced.

For the second consecutive year, Juventus placed fourth in Serie A, 16 points behind champions AC Milan. For the nine seasons prior, they had won the Italian championship, with Pogba playing a significant role in each of their victories from 2012–13 to 2015–16.
