“I Just Took my Eyes Off Him”: Richard Commey Talks Defeat to Lomachenko

Former IBF World champion, Richard Commey has opened up after his unanimous decision loss to Ukrainian, Vasiliy Lomachenko.

Coming into the bout with victories in their last fights, both boxers were eying a spot for the mandatory challenger to the WBO World Lightweight title held by Australian, George Kambosos. The Ghanaian, 34 , could not match the speed and work rate of the Ukrainian, 33 , who pounded him with clean shots resulting in a round 7 knock down. Commey survived the round even after Loma signaled for the end of if. Commey was thoroughly outboxed as Lomachenko cruised to a dominating unanimous decision victory at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday night. Judges scored it 119-108, 119-108 and 117-110, all in favor of the Ukrainian.

Commey said: “I fight for my country, I fight for my people. You know, I let them down but I believe I going to come back stronger,” Richard Commey said. “I think the round I dropped down, like I just took my eyes off him a second and then boom, you know what I mean, I just took my eyes off him and that’s it. “I could have stayed focused all along and it is what it is you know what I mean, he [Lomachenko] is a great fighter, I did what I had to do and I’m proud of my people, I fight for them and love them so much. “It’s just hard for me to take it, I feel I’m the only one representing them now so I mean, it is what it is. “I thank God that I’m good, I’m not hurt, nothing happens to me so glory be to God.” Richard Commey added.

Richard Commey now stands at (30-4,27 KOs) with Vasiliy Lomachenko rising up to (16-2, 11 KOs). Lomachenko will possibly have a crack at the WBO World title held by George Kambosos and he cannot wait to take that chance. He said:"I need this chance," he said. "If God gives me this chance, I'll take it. "I'll go anywhere I need to fight him."
