Men like me because of what I do - female taekwondo instructor

Taekwondo instructor, Kezia Gbeje is one of the few ladies in Ghana in the Martial Arts (taekwondo) industry despite the conceptions surrounding it.

In an exclusive on SVTV Africa, the athlete stated that it is her dream to introduce more women into martial arts since women are more likely to be attacked. She added that men who have approached her on a relationship basis like her because of her job.

“I'm dating and surprisingly this who approach me liked me because of this. Because they believe when you do this, you are confident and do not need to be around always to protect you. It's just a few people who comment on my posts saying I'll beat my husband but I don't let it get to me,” she told host DJ Nyaami.

Kezia also shared how she began and why she dropped her certificate to become a taekwondo athlete/teacher.

“I started doing taekwondo when I was in the Accra technical University in 2015. I didn't know anything about taekwondo but I was curious. I didn't have an interest in it but I wanted to see what they do and if I can do it, fine.”

In response to whether her parents are supportive of her job, she said “fortunately, my parents didn't have any problem with it. My mum knows that I like sports since childhood so she didn't say anything about it. I travelled to Nigeria to compete so they see it as something that will help me.”

Speaking on the downside of her job, she mentioned that “you can be injured but every day is a learning process. Even when you have a black belt, you're not a master.”
