The blues were linked to several marquee players when the transfer window opened but were not able to secure most of their transfer targets due to several impediments. However some of them have began the season on a fantastic note and one of them is Westham midfielder, Declan Rice who put up a scintillating display at the St James stadium today. Rice was a key performer when the Hammmers staged a brilliant comeback, overturning a 2-1 scoreline to thrash Newcastle United 2-4 to win the three maximum point. Rice wasn't on the score sheet but combined very well with Cezh midfielder, Tomáš Souček to nullify the attacks of Newcastle.
Declan Rice made two timely interceptions, created two vital chances and completed three take-ons. The 22 year old also made 50 passes throughout the game with 98% passing accuracy which proved overly crucial in Westham's win today. His amazing midfielder contribution would have given Chelsea extra quality in their midfield if the blues sealed his transfer. He is one of the academy product of Chelsea and the blues wanted to bring him back, but his astronomical price tag of €70m barred his move. Meanwhile, Westham is also keen to keep him at the club and are contemplating on handing him another long term contract soon to ward off interest from other clubs.
Nonetheless the blues may decide to end their pursuit for the English star considering the form of Chelsea's midfielder trio, Ngolo Kante, Jorginho and Kovacic under Thomas Tuchel. The trio have been outstanding for sometime and it looks like a midfield augmentation is not necessary for the blues for the time the being.
