Criminal activities have become so rampant and criminals are devising every means possible to reach out to their target victims. One platform that bad people use to prank and to dupe their victims is Social Media. Their modus operandi is to create accounts in the name of big time politicians, Members of Parliament, influential and trusted people and then extort monies from their Victims in the name of offering them juicy appointments and opportunities. Several Politicians have been victims of these clone social media accounts and have had cause to issue disclaimers in order that unsuspecting Ghanaians do not fall for scams.
The latest politician to have fake pages created in his name is Member of Parliament for Akim Abuakwa Constituency and former Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea. He has distanced himself from dozens of such platforms and has warned the public to be mindful of dealing with people behind the fraudulent activities. Mr. Atta Akyea in a post published on his authentic Facebook page indicated that he has already reported to the necessary authorities for investigations to be conducted into the matter and for possible arrest and prosecutions to be made against persons found culpable of such criminal activities.
"My attention has been drawn to numerous Facebook account using my name and images to extort monies from innocent Ghanaians in the name of getting them jobs and unexisting opportunities. I hereby wish to inform the general public that, this is fraudulent, and they should therefore disregard any message or post from these fraudsters. I have handed over this issue to the appropriate quarters for investigations," The MP wrote along with screenshots of the Clone accounts established in his name.
