Dr Omane Boamah Tackles NPP Government On SIM Cards Registration And Ghana Cards

Former Minister of Communications, Dr Edward Omane Boamah following the ongoing SIM Card re-registration and many people queuing to get their Ghana Cards has tackle the NPP government with questions.

In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, 3rd August 2022, he wrote;

"Why couldn't government combine phone numbers with Ghana card registration to save Ghanaians from multiple queues? Ghanaians gave NIA their local and foreign phone numbers (The NIA form attached confirms)."

This means your Vodafone, MTN, Airtel-Tigo...numbers have already been captured by the NIA and they have linked it to your Ghana card in the NIA system."

Dr. Omane Boamah still maintained that we could have saved Ghanaians the long queues.

"Why ask Ghanaians to visit MTN, Vodafone etc. to use their Ghana cards that is already linked to the NIA system, to register their phone numbers? But the NIA & Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia must also be blamed!" He quizzed.

On the stockpile of Ghana Cards which have not been collected: NIA, why repeat the mistake of the past? What was the exact contract given to the vendor that is issuing the Ghana Cards? Was the contract to repeat the past mistakes?

The John Dramani Mahama administration was determined not to repeat past mistakes of UNCOLLECTED GHANA CARDS. And was working towards instant issuance. That is possible now for many places in Ghana when internet penetration improved with 4G LTE and the massive fibre optic broadband which we laid. Hence the conscious care approach we adopted.

Unfortunately, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia saw the progress made, did not analyse all the variables together and rushed into implementation. He got praised initially but we knew the past mistake of uncollected Ghana cards was waiting for him and the government.

He remarked that he support SIM card registration 100% but I am disappointed in how it has been implemented by this government.

"I support issuance of Ghana cards to Ghanaians to develop an Integrated Population Register (IPRS) as we had envisaged, but I am appalled this government has repeated the mistake of UNCOLLECTED GHANA CARDS." He said.

He urged government to set realistic deadlines (for SIM registration) consistent with NIA current capabilities and rollout plan for Ghana Card issuance.
