A visit to Ghanaland reveals the most amazing Islands you’ve probably never heard of or visited.

An island is a body of land surrounded by water. Continents are also surrounded by water, but because they are so big, they are not considered islands.

Ghana is blessed with many islands, but the most amazing and popular one are listed below.

Seva Island.

Seva Island is located in the Keta Lagoon, in the Keta-Volta Region. It is one of the islands forming the archipelago (cluster or collection of islands) of the Keta Lagoon. It covers an area of approximately 2.7 square miles.

The first to establish church in the Seva town of the Island was the AME Zion Church. It also built schools which now serves the junior high school level.

In the late 1930s, citizens of Seva who were determined to receive formal education had to commute between Seva and Anyako, either by canoe or by fording the lagoon to and from school. The Island was completely surrounded by water (the Keta Lagoon), until recently, when a road was carved through from Konu near Anyako.

The people of Seva are part of the Ewes who migrated from Notsie in the Republic of Togo. Seva is divided into the north (Adziehe) and South (Anyiehe) divisions. There are three Chieftaincy Stools in Seva, namely Lotsu Makwa, Adzomani and Adoblanui-Xornyo Stools. The Lotsu Makwa Stool is the Dufia Stool or Senior Chief Stool.

The Seva Island is important as a bird-watching site; because it is a stopover point for many birds. The town is blessed with many other site attractions such as the sandy beaches, etc.

Bobowasi Island.

Bobowasi Island is an island in Ghana, in the Axim Bay of the Atlantic Ocean. It is located 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) from the town of Axim and Axim Castle, north of Watts Rock, east of Egwang Rock, and south of Mensell Hedwig Rock, at the geographic coordinates 04°52′N 02°15′W. Administratively, it is part of the Western Region of Ghana, 238 km (148 mi) west of the capital, Accra.

According to history, the Bobowasi Island was initially a very thick forest. People were not allowed to go to the Island because of the presence of dwarfs. One day, a certain man by name, Arezi visited the Island nicodemously to look at what was there. According to the story, Arenzi was beating mercilessly by the dwarfs living him weak on theIsland.

The next day, when his family went to the island in search of him, they found him alive and very weak. Then they said: “Bebo Arezi”. “Bebo Arezi” in the Ghanaian Nzema language literally means ‘they have beaten Arezi’, hence the name of the island ‘Bebo Arezi’. The name ‘Bebo Arezi’ over the years has transformed to ‘Bobo Arezi’, which is now known as Bobowasi Island.

Dodi Island.

Dodi Island is an island in Ghana, located 5 kilometres (3 nmi; 3 mi) off the shore of Lake Volta. It is a tourist destination and a land place for the well known Ghanaian cruise ship-Dodi Princess.

The Island provides tourist and holiday makers an opportunity to experience nature at its best. Visitor to the Island enjoys fantastic view of the Volta Lake, as well as the beautiful banks of the Volta River.

The Dodi Island is located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, with a population of 600 as at 2012. The main occupation of the local people on the Island is fishing.
