The efficiency of ECOWAS has come under scrutiny following the ousting of Alpha Conde in Guinea. Despite the economic and trading agreement within the ECOWAS countries, it is surprising to note that it is become easier to travel to Europe than to travel from Ghana to Nigeria on road.
Many people have even suggested that ECOWAS should be dissolved because it has failed in its core mandate of protecting and promoting the economic growth and freedom of the people of West African.
Desmond Twumasi Ntow made this disclosure on 'Good Morning Africa' on Pan Africa television when he lamented the ineffectiveness of ECOWAS.
According to Desmond Twumasi Ntow, when he hears people talk about ECOWAS, the only thing that comes into his mind is how united are we as an economic state of West Africa because just traveling by road from Ghana to Benin will give you a different perspective of ECOWAS.
He indicated that in terms of trade, ECOWAS is saying that we are united yet, there is no free flow of goods at our borders, and the diplomacy involved is nothing to write home about.
"The hustle I went through when I went to Nigeria, when I came back to Ghana, I told myself there is no ECOWAS."
Desmond Twumasi Ntow revealed that the hustle from Accra to Nigeria by road is heartbreaking to the extent that they needed to pack their car because they couldn't afford the money being demanded by the border officials.
So, to him, ECOWAS has no business doing in Guinea. They should return to their various countries, and restructure their economies and see how they can help their economy to grow. He added that ECOWAS should even be dissolved because it is of no use to us the people.
