'Applicants for visas should contact us directly' - Netherlands Ambassador

The Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Jeroen Verheul, has asked visa applicants to contact his office immediately if they have questions about their visa applications.

This, he claims, will assist to eliminate a lot of media misunderstandings and miscommunications.

The importance of "diplomatic contacts and bilateral embassies," according to the Netherlands Ambassador.

Alhassan S. Suhuyini, the MP for Tamale North, claimed in a Facebook post that the Netherlands Embassy had denied him a visa.

He related it to his involvement with MPs working to pass legislation criminalizing LGBTQ+ activity in Ghana.

Despite submitting all appropriate paperwork, Suhuyini stated he was denied an entry visa to the Netherlands with the argument that he would not return to Ghana.

“For the Netherlands to disregard my status as a member of Parliament with responsibility for an entire constituency, my valid travel visas to the United Kingdom and the United States, and my numerous previous travel records, which indicate I have never overstayed any visit abroad, my lovely family, and deny me an entry visa on the basis that there was insufficient evidence that I have”

After the debate on the criminalization of LGBTQI+ activities in Ghana, Ningo-Prampram MP Sam Nartey George criticized the Dutch Embassy in Ghana for resorting to blackmail.

Following the refusal of an entry visa to his colleague MP, Alhassan S. Suhuyini, he threatened to launch a campaign against Dutch interests in Ghana.

"They resort to such cheap blackmail when they fail to win the debate." Stay strong, my brother and coworker, because we will triumph in this endeavor.

"We will demand full remuneration for the Embassy's activities and launch a battle against Dutch interests in Ghana." We will triumph!” Suhuyini received help from Sam George.

"If the visa applicant just spoke to us directly, rather than through the media, we could avoid a lot of misconceptions and confusion in the (social) media," Jeroen Verheul wrote on his verified Twitter account in response. That is why diplomatic relations and bilateral embassies are so vital."
