The Management of Ghana Education Service have invited teachers at Senior High Schools and Junior High Schools to participate in a nationwide ICT training for teachers amidst the ongoing strike action by Pre-tertiary teachers. According to GES it is part of the One-Teacher, One-Laptop initiative. A release by GES said that all teachers are expected to undergo some basic ICT training to help them use the various e-learning resources that have been made available on the laptops.
The National Teaching Council (NTC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE), Ghana Education Service (GES), and UNICEF, has arranged an online course for all teachers to earn 15 CPD points in order to renew their licenses. According to NTC, this is a two-week training aimed at primary school teachers (BS1 to BS6), as well as headteachers and School Improvement Support Officers (SISOs).
The National Teaching Council is the sole body responsible for the issuance of license to professional teachers in Ghana. One the basic requirement of licensed teachers is to participate in workshops and training activities organised by certified Continuous Professional Development providers. The National Teaching Council has sent links to Human Resource Management Development officers of the various Education Directorates.
The first three Districts to be issued teachers licence are Sekyere South in the Ashanti, Savelugu in the Northern Region and Shai-Osudoku in the the Greater Accra Region. Workshops and training programmes are being organised for Teachers in these Districts to build points towards renewal of the licence. The Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points required by In-service teachers before they can renew their licence are: Senior Superintendent II 70, Senior Superintendent I 75, Principal Superintendent 80, Assistant Director II 85, Assistant Director I 90 and Deputy Director 100. There are various activities to be participated by the teacher to earn more points on the National Teaching Council's Portal.
The National Teaching Council is to introduce a new points-based assessment to determine which license holding staff of the Ghana Education Service qualifies to renew his or her NTC License if it expires or becomes due for renewal. The new Teacher License renewal system was made known at a workshop organized by the NTC at the GNAT Hall in Accra.
