This is in fulfilment of the pledge he made in this year's Message on the State of the Nation, on 30th March 2022, when he stated that steps were being taken to turn the planned Bunso campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development into a standalone, independent University dedicated to the study of Engineering.

The management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has explained their decision to ask over 6,000 students to defer their courses. There have been rising concerns amongst a section of KNUST students following a management decision deferring courses for students who have failed to settle a required percentage of their fees.
Very worrying situation at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as about 6000 students have been made to defer their courses due to their inability to pay their school fees. Prior to the incident happening, the University’s management body issued a warning that any student owing over 70% will be asked to defer automatically by the school’s system.
Over 6,000 students currently at KNUST have being asked to defer their courses this semester as a result of failing to pay 70% of their owing school fees. Per the reports from the management of the University, most of the deferred students invested their school fees in certain ventures which led to their inability to settle their outstanding school fees.
